This morning, I was looking through the grocery store weekly advertisements and noticed something interesting. At a glance, I noticed that there was more junk food then healthy food. So, I counted each food item, which included everything from beer, cheese, bread, water, meat, frozen foods, etc... Here are the numbers that I found when I counted the food items in three papers.
The first paper had 128 food items, of which 47% was healthy food and 53% was junk food*. Of the 128 food items, only 34% was very healthy food**.
The second paper had 114 food items, of which 48% was healthy food and 49% was junk food*. Of the 114 food items, only 45% was very healthy food**.
The third paper had 111 food items, of which 41% was healthy food and 59% was junk food*. Of the 111 food items, only 32% was very healthy food**.
So, maybe the grocery stores could do more to help people eat more healthy foods. I was shopping a couple of weeks ago and looking to see if my healthy food would be on sale and the only sale items I could find was junk food. I wasn't happy, I even asked the worker nearby why healthy foods aren't on sale more often and he had no answer. So, maybe if everyone asked the manager of their favorite store to see what it takes for the store to have more healthy foods on sale more often. Good luck on that quest and with those requests...
* soda, ice cream, processed meats, chips, candy, frozen dinners, beer, sugar juices, boxed prepared meals, etc...
** unprocessed meats, fresh & plain frozen veggies, eggs, milk, water, whole wheat breads, org juice, etc...
The healthy foods had some processed foods like cheese, yogurt, healthy (based) chips, breads, some (healthy based) frozen dinners, and (healthy based) soups, plain pastas, etc...
